Practice pack!

I foolishly tried a practice pack today!

Eek! What a pile of stuff I've got to take with me, will have to forget a few things I think. Not far over the weight limit though, just cant get everything into the bags!

I've taken everything out of their packaging, squashed things everywhere but my two checked bags and my carry on are chocka.

I can save a bit of weight by rationalising some stuff, but only a few clothes I can cut back and they don't weigh much or take up  much or take up much space. My tools pretty much all fit into one box, might be able to loose one pliers but not much to cut back on there, and very little space to be gained.

Toiletries is where it's at I think, 2 sun lotions and after-suns weigh 1.6kg and take up a fair amount of space, two deodorants, one shower gel, one shaving foam, 4 bars of soap, half a dozen assorted ointments, various painkillers, plasters etc.  I could drop one sun lotion and after sun, not much else I could cut back on.

Odds and ends of electrical equipment add up too, just a 4 plug extension with surge protection is a fair lump. Lots of CDs (mainly blank but some installation disks too), some assorted cables (I have loads more I could take too), and some spare fuses, batteries etc.  Not sure where I can cut back there either.

I may have to fill my coat up with stuff and somehow break even.
Still it is just the first attempt, and I'm in the right ball park at least.

10 days to go! Getting exciting now... :)

  1. Not many people commenting so I thought I'd make a comment myself (and save a follow up post on packing).
I had a 2nd go at packing, changed to a slightly lighter case (also a bit smaller), threw out a few bits and managed to get pretty much everything in and under the weight limit.

Unfortunately I noticed that there were a few items I had forgotten completely in both attempts, so will try again in a day or two.

  3. Thank you Phil, I suspect even without artificial challenges I will want to get out of there at some point in the first month or two. :)

  5. Thanks Lee, I might take one toilet roll with me, but will be buying a big back when I get there, don't fancy the local method much... :o (using your left hand)

  6. Hello,

Looks like you are dead organised. One of the things to remember is that you'll be able to buy anything that you leave behind - and even the specialist stuff will be there but maybe at a price. But toiletries won't be a problem, I'm sure - and will probably be cheaper than at home. In terms of the baggage allowance - it really is 3 x 23kg if you are going with BA on missionary/charity fares. I went via Nairobi on Kenya Airlines so missed out.

Your house looks brilliant - can I have it?

I hope that it is all that you would like it to be. It certainly is better than doing the same old, same old and the weather is better - am some people would give their right arms to be going to The Gambia and getting paid for it (you can, of course, keep your left arm).

  7. Hi Pauline
I don't have much cash left for buying things like mad there, and unfortunately I'm not going with BA instead it is Brussels airlines. The house is pretty decent all things considered.
I'm glad I can keep my arm. :)
